Christmas can be one long chase when you have small children and a tree with decorations. Toddlers and small children can’t resist the sparkling lights and pretty ornaments that are dangling just inches from their faces. If you put the ornaments and lights where the child couldn’t reach them you’d be sure to have a half-naked tree which wouldn’t look very attractive. A fence around the tree isn’t a realistic option either, so how do you protect your child from pulling a heavy tree laden with glass on top of himself and keep your ornaments from being destroyed? The most important thing you need to keep your holiday safe is a tree stand that can not be tipped over. There are several different types of tree stands that are guaranteed to stay upright and if you want to add some extra measures, tie a piece of wire around the main stem of your tree and attach it to the wall with a hook or screw.

There’s no way around it, your child is going to take ornaments off the tree. Set lights far enough into the tree that your little one won’t pull on them, the prickle of needles will usually discourage children from venturing too far into the tree. Put all glass ornaments at the top of the tree, not only will they be safer, your child will not risk being cut by broken pieces. Place unbreakable ornaments around the bottom of the tree, those of cloth and plastic or wood can be taken off or moved around by children and you can fix it after they go to bed at night. It is better to put something on the tree that the children can play with rather than going crazy chasing them around all day and being a nervous wreck.

If you have a live tree and small children, don’t use chemicals in the water to make your tree last longer. Plain water and a bit of sugar will work almost as well as chemicals and if your child drinks it there will be no ill effects.
